As we begin the final half term of the academic year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been an exceptionally positive and purposeful year so far at Menston Primary School and to look ahead to the many exciting opportunities still to come.
The spring term truly showcased the very best of our school community. Across all year groups, pupils demonstrated curiosity, compassion, creativity and resilience – qualities that lie at the heart of our ambitious and carefully designed curriculum. Through well-sequenced learning experiences, children have developed both secure knowledge and the confidence to apply their understanding in a wide range of contexts.
A particular highlight was Science Week, which was a tremendous success. The Science Fair, supported by parents, carers, community members and staff, provided rich, hands-on experiences in areas such as astronomy, climate change, life cycles and human biology. It was inspiring to see pupils thinking scientifically, asking questions and sharing their knowledge so confidently with families during our Science Celebration event.
We were also incredibly proud of the way pupils demonstrated our school values through social action. The World Down Syndrome Day fundraising fair, organised by our School Council and supported by pupils in Years 5 and 6, was a wonderful example of leadership in action. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the event raised an impressive £1,398.55 for the Bingley Down Syndrome Training & Support Centre – reflecting both empathy and enterprise in equal measure.
Outdoor learning and community links have continued to enrich our curriculum. The Year 2 community tree-planting project in Porritt’s Field, delivered in partnership with the Menston Area Nature Trust, enabled pupils to bring their learning about sustainability and the environment to life while making a meaningful contribution to their local area.
Sporting opportunities have also been a key strength this year. Despite a particularly challenging cross-country season, pupils demonstrated determination, teamwork and resilience, with several outstanding individual achievements at West Yorkshire level. In addition, many of our pupils have represented the school with great pride through their participation in the IGS sports leagues, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and commitment across a range of sporting events. These experiences reflect our commitment to developing positive attitudes towards both learning and physical wellbeing.
We were delighted that Menston Primary has achieved myHappymind Gold Accreditation, recognising our whole-school commitment to mental health and wellbeing. Pupils speak confidently about their emotions, resilience and strategies to support their wellbeing – an important foundation for both learning and life. We are also proud to celebrate the success of many pupils who have achieved awards through our school’s citizenship scheme this year. In particular, five pupils were recognised with the highest level Governor Award, which was presented by our Chair of Governors, Mrs Nottingham, at the end of last term. This significant achievement reflects the outstanding commitment these pupils have shown to demonstrating our school values in action. More broadly, the citizenship scheme continues to play an important role in recognising pupils’ contributions to our school community and in developing responsible, respectful and active citizens.
As we look to the final weeks of the summer term, there is a strong sense of momentum across school. Pupils continue to benefit from a rich programme of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. Educational visits remain a key part of this offer: Year 4 pupils have already benefited from their residential to Newby Wiske Hall, developing independence, teamwork and resilience. Year 5 are looking forward to their visit to Cartwright Hall to find out more about the art of the Early Islamic Civilization and Year 2 will deepen their scientific understanding through hands-on experiences at Eureka! Year 3 pupils will benefit from applying their trumpet-playing skills when they have the opportunity to play with the Halle Orchestra.
Our Year 6 pupils have approached their SATs with maturity and determination, and we are immensely proud of their positive attitudes and commitment. Following this important milestone, they enjoyed their residential visit to Great Tower in the Lake District, where they developed independence, resilience and teamwork in an inspiring outdoor setting. Further opportunities, including an outdoor learning day at Harewood House, will allow them to celebrate their achievements, reflect on their primary journey and look ahead with confidence and excitement to the next stage of their education.
The coming weeks promise to be filled with further enrichment and celebration, including performances, sporting events, transition activities and whole-school events that bring our community together. These experiences play a vital role in developing pupils’ confidence, character and sense of belonging.
As part of our ongoing commitment to high-quality personal development and SMSC provision, we are also delighted to be working towards the Red Kite RED Award. This will enable us to further strengthen and showcase the breadth and richness of our curriculum, and to celebrate the many ways in which our pupils grow as thoughtful, responsible and engaged citizens.
At Menston Primary School, we are proud to provide a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child is supported to achieve their very best. As we approach the end of the academic year, we look forward to celebrating the many successes of our pupils and continuing to provide meaningful experiences that inspire a lifelong love of learning.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support. These achievements are shared by our entire community. I feel very fortunate to lead such a vibrant and engaged school and I look forward to celebrating many more successes with you over the remainder of this term through our weekly newsletters. If you have anything that you need to ask me about or let me know about, please email the school office, come to see me or give me a call and I will get back to you.
