Menston Primary School

Making our world a better place

Volunteering

At Menston Primary School, we greatly value the contribution that volunteers can make to school life and the positive impact they can have on our pupils.

To ensure that volunteering opportunities are meaningful, well supported and compliant with safeguarding requirements, we do not maintain an open register of volunteers or encourage speculative applications. Instead, we will recruit volunteers when a specific need has been identified within the school. When volunteer opportunities become available, we will communicate these to the school community and provide the appropriate application forms, along with details of the safeguarding and DBS checks required for the role.

When opportunities arise, we may invite volunteers to support activities such as:

  • Reading with children
  • Supporting individual pupils or small groups
  • Assisting with educational visits
  • Supporting curriculum activities and enrichment opportunities
  • Helping with special events and projects

Where appropriate, volunteers may include parents and carers, members of the local community, governors, former pupils and other individuals with relevant skills and experience.

Safeguarding and DBS Checks

The safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our highest priority. All volunteer arrangements are subject to appropriate safeguarding procedures and statutory guidance.

All volunteers who are engaged in regulated activity will require an Enhanced DBS Check with Children’s Barred List information

Activities will generally be considered regulated activity where they involve teaching, training, instructing, caring for or supervising children on more than 3 days within a 30-day period

It is an offence for:

  • A barred person to engage in regulated activity; and
  • An organisation to allow a barred person to engage in regulated activity.

Parents and Carers Helping in School

Parents and carers who support school activities on an occasional basis, such as accompanying an educational day-visit, will not normally require an Enhanced DBS Check with Children’s Barred List information. In these cases the volunteer will be supervised by school staff at all times and will need to agree to the school’s code of conduct for parent volunteers.

Work Experience Placements

We welcome applications from young people attending secondary schools who wish to complete a Y10 or Y12 work experience placement at Menston Primary School.

Students interested in a placement should complete the relevant application form and return it to:

office@menston.mlt.co.uk

Please note that placements are subject to availability, safeguarding requirements and the school’s capacity to provide appropriate supervision and support.

A work experience application form can be downloaded here.

Further Information

If the school identifies a need for volunteers, details of the opportunity and the application process will be communicated within the school community.
